Diplocaulobium lageniforme

Diplocaulobium lageniforme (J.J.Sm.) Kraenzl., in Engl., Pflanzenr. IV. 50. II. B. 21 (1910) 340.

Basionym: Dendrobium lageniforme.

Pseudobulbs crowded, 1-leaved, at the base obovoid, 1.5 by 0.75 cm, upper part slender, 1.8 mm wide, at the apex to 4 mm wide. Leaves erect, lanceolate, 6.5 by 2.3 cm, coriaceous, apex bidentate. Inflorescences 1-flowered; peduncle 1.1 cm long. Pedicel 4 cm long; ovary 0.4 cm long. Flower c. 6 cm across. Dorsal sepal linear, dilated at the base, 3.6 cm by 4.7 mm. Lateral sepals 3.6 cm by 9 mm, mentum c. 0.7 cm long. Petals 3.3 cm long. Lip 3-lobed, 1.27 by 0.63 cm, with two papillose-granular keels; midlobe in the centre with a hairy callus. Column 0.35 cm long; column-foot 0.7 cm long.

Colours: Sepals and petals whitish, tips yellow, lip whitish, on the lateral lobes with confluent wine-red streaks.

Habitat: Not known, in the lowlands.

Flowering time in the wild: Not known.

Distribution: New Guinea (endemic).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua (Merauke Regency).

Notes: Diplocaulobium lageniforme is closely related to Diplocaulobium aratriferum, Diplocaulobium phalangium, and many other, similar species. The whole group is urgently in need of revision. D. lageniforme will probably turn out to be a common and widespread species.

Cultivation: Warm growing epiphyte.
