Dendrobium coelandria

Dendrobium coelandria Kraenzl., in Engl., Pflanzenr. IV. 50. II. B. 21 (1910) 132.

Type: Fitzgerald 50 (holo B, lost).

Stems elongated, narrowing to base and apex, 30-40 cm by 5-8 mm, many-leaved, with c. 25-28 internodes. Leaves ovate, 4-5.5 by 1-1.5 cm, subcoriaceous, base semiamplexicaul. Inflorescences from the upper internodes, racemose, short; rachis 1 cm long, few-flowered. Floral bracts triangular, minute, shorter than pedicel and ovary. Flowers 1.6 cm long. Dorsal sepal ovate-oblong, 0.4 cm by 4-5 mm. Lateral sepals triangular in outline, 1.3 cm by 5 mm, mentum 8-9 mm long, 2-3 mm diameter in lateral view, open in front. Petals only slightly shorter than the dorsal sepal, broadly oblong, c. 0.4 cm by 4-5 mm, apex obtuse. Lip spathulate, 1.2 by 0.5 cm, base broadly linear, widening towards the apex, with a low transverse lamella in basal third, the midvein on the disc slightly thickened, otherwise smooth, apex flabellate, forming an obtuse angle, margin minutely denticulate. Column with rounded, oblong, stelidia, filament incurved, subulate.

Habitat: Not known. Altitude 1000 m.

Flowering time in the wild: September.

Distribution: New Guinea (endemic).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua New Guinea (South-eastern part, 'Jimari').

Notes: An obscure species, only known from the description.
