Diplocaulobium janowskyi

Diplocaulobium janowskyi (J.J.Sm.) P.F.Hunt & Summerh., Taxon 10 (1961) 109 ('janowskii').

Basionym: Dendrobium janowskyi.

Rhizome short. Pseudobulbs crowded, 1-leaved, base fusiform, 2 by 0.65 cm, upper part very slender, 8-17.5 by 0.1-0.13 cm. Leaves linear, 8-10 by 0.43-0.5 cm, apex bidentate. Inflorescences 1-flowered, spathe 1.2-1.5 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 2.3 cm long. Flower c. 5 cm across. Dorsal sepal 3 cm by 3.6 mm; mentum c. 0.65 cm long. Petals 2.8 cm by 1.5 mm. Lip 3-lobed, 1.48 by 0.75 cm, with 2 keels, between the keels in apical part papillose-pubescent, not swollen; midlobe 0.88 by 0.48 cm. Column 0.26 cm long; column-foot 0.65.

Colours: Flower (probably past anthesis) red with yellow lip.

Habitat: Not recorded, presumably in rainforest. Altitude 80 m.

Flowering time in the wild: June.

Distribution: New Guinea (endemic).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua (Nabire Regency).

Notes: Diplocaulobium janowskyi is related to Diplocaulobium hydrophilum, both species having a very slender habit and a lip without a callus.

Cultivation: Warm growing epiphyte.
