Basionym: Microstylis sciaphila var. bismarckiensis
Differs from the typical variety in the broader leaves (to 2.3 cm wide) and the flowers having longer pedicels (to 0.6 cm [presumably including the ovary]). (After Schlechter, 1911-1914)
Colours: Flowers deep wine-red with darker transparent short stripes.
Habitat: Terrestrial in montane forest; 1400 m.
Flowering time in the wild: November.
Distribution: Malesia (New Guinea, endemic).
