Bulbophyllum foetidilabrum

Bulbophyllum foetidilabrum Ormerod, Oasis 2, 1 (2001) 4, fig.

Type: Dissing et al. 2328, ex Bismarck Archipelago sine loc. (holo C)

Rhizome terete, 0.2-0.3 cm thick. Roots terete, glabrous, 0.05 cm thick. Pseudobulbs 1.5-2 cm apart, ovoid-cylindric; surrounded by a thin, fibrously nerved, 3.5 cm long sheath that gradually disintegrates leaving the fibres, 1-leaved, 2.23 by 0.6-0.7 cm at the base, apex 0.3 cm thick. Leaves coriaceous, ligulate, acute, 15-16 by 1.8-2.l cm; petiole 2-2.5 cm long. Inflorescence emerging from the base of the pseudobulbs, 24-27 by 0.15-0.2 cm; sheathing bracts three, scattered, tubular, 0.8-l cm long; rachis 7.5-8 cm long, laxly and more or less successively 5-6-flowered. Floral bracts tubular, clasping the rachis and pedicellate ovary, 0.7-0.9 cm long. Flower (lip) foetid. Median sepal ligulate, lanceolate, acute, 5-veined, 1.8 by 0.4-0.5 cm. Lateral sepals oblong-ligulate, conduplicate, obtuse, outer medial vein with a laminate keel, five veined, 2.4 by 0.7-0.8 cm. Petals fleshy, ovate, acute, 0.4 by 0.15 cm. Lip elliptic, subacute, softly fleshy, foveolate in lower half, 1.5 by 0.5-0.6 cm. Column stout, 0.4-0.5 by 0.25 cm laterally; column-foot 0.1 cm long. Pedicellate ovary stout, 4.5 by 0.15-0.2 cm; capsule 2.2 by 0.5 cm. (After Ormerod, 2001)

Colours: Flower colour not recorded, but the sepals appear to have been greenish with red-purple stripes, the lip is wine-red.

Distribution: Malesia (New Guinea).
