Section Monanthaparva

Bulbophyllum section Monanthaparva Ridl., J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 32 (1896) 269

Minute to rather small epiphytes. Rhizomes creeping or straggling; rhizome bracts thin, surface glabrous to colliculate, caducous including, usually, the veins (sometimes only 1 vein present). Roots sprouting from nodes along the length of the rhizome, or from below the pseudobulbs only, spreading, glabrous to slightly and locally hirsute. Pseudobulbs conspicuous compared to the size of the plant, 1-leafed, with shoots usually sprouting from its basal node and free, not fused to the pseudobulb. Leaves persistent, thin to thick, veins inconspicuous to distinct. Inflorescences sprouting from nodes along the length of the rhizome or from the (sub-)basal node of the pseudobulb only, single to few-fasciculate; usually 1-flowered. Peduncle shorter or longer than the pseudobulbs, but usually shorter than the leaves, peduncle bracts 2— 3, (sub-)basal. Flowers per sympodium 1 open at a time; floral bracts tubular; pedicel with the basal node well above the attachment of the floral bract, longer than the ovary. Sepals free (the laterals adherent along the lower margin in Bulbophyllum membranaceum), the laterals not or hardly longer than the median; 2.5— 14 mm long, elliptic to triangular, obtuse to acuminate, margins glabrous to papillose; thin to rather thick, 3-veined, adaxial surface glabrous to papillose. Petals 1— 4 mm long, elliptic to oblong to triangular, retuse to truncate to acuminate, margins entire to (slightly) erose, glabrous to papillose; thin, 1-veined, surface glabrous. Lip mobile on a thin ligament, with or without auricles near the base of the lip, undivided, 1— 3.8 mm long, elliptic or oblong, through ovate, to triangular and linear, margins (partly) papillose to ciliate, sometimes glabrous; adaxially usually more or less concave near the base, without ridges, or with two more or less converging flexural ridges, sometimes a median ridge which is low over its entire length also present, adaxial and/or abaxial surface (partly) papillose to ciliate, sometimes glabrous. Column with the rostellum front well receding in between the stelidia, stigma (rather) large, without keels inside, proximally often protruding or with a slight callus, column foot usually tapering towards its top, free part virtually absent to rather long; tip with or without an inconspicuous to distinct (and sometimes slightly transversely widened) median tooth just short of the ligament. Stelidia often 1/2 of the length of the column or longer, sometimes shorter, distinct, triangular to subulate, often with a tooth along the upper or lower margin. Anther abaxially with a (low) rounded crest, front concave or not, front margin drawn out into a small, triangular beak or not. Pollinia 2, or 4 with the inner varying from minute to as long as the outer; without appendages

Distribution
New Guinea: 1 taxon. Altogether 29 provisionally accepted taxa (37 names): China and Vietnam, Thailand, Sumatra and Java to the Philippines and Sulawesi, New Guinea and Pacific.

Notes
Lectotypified and the species listed in Vermeulen & O'Byrne (2008: 114). The single New Guinea species differs from sect. Minutissima in its adhearent lateral sepals.
