Dendrobium millarae

Dendrobium millarae A.D.Hawkes, Lloydia 20 (1957) 121 (nom. nov.).

Basionym: Dendrobium dischorense Schltr.

Rhizome short, decumbent, roots elongated, filiform, flexuose, glabrous. Stems erect to suberect, slightly laterally compressed, not or sparsely branched, 20-30 cm by 2 mm, many-leaved. Leaf sheaths 0.2 cm wide, entirely covering the stem. Leaves erect to suberect, lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, 1.5-2.5 cm long, base subpetiolate, apex subacute, carnose, shiny. Inflorescences arising laterally from the stem, 1-flowered, sessile. Pedicel and ovary 0.6 cm long, glabrous. Floral bract very small, much shorter than the ovary. Flower not resupinated, c. 0.8 cm long. Dorsal sepal oblong, 0.55 cm long, apex obtuse. Lateral sepals obliquely oblong, sublobate-widened at the base, 0.55 cm long, front margins coherent, apex obtuse; mentum sac-like, 0.25 cm long, obtuse. Petals obliquely oblong-ligulate, a little shorter than the sepals, apex obtuse. Lip 3-lobed near the apex, with a ligulate claw, in apical half broadly cuneate, 0.5 by 0.35 cm, inside pilose, with two lamellae extending from the base to just below the apex, the lamellae constricted in the middle, strongly raised in apical half, truncate in front; lateral lobes with truncate, lightly undulate front margins, apex obtuse; midlobe a little longer, semiquadrangular, in front obtusely 3-lobulate, with the median lobule somewhat longer than the laterals. Column semiterete, clinandrium 3-lobulate, the lateral lobules rounded, the median a little longer, triangular; column-foot foveolate, 0.25 cm long. Anther rounded-cucullate, glabrous, in front subretuse.

Colours: Flower white, lip with red markings.

Habitat: Epiphyte in lower montane forest. Altitude 1200 m.

Flowering time in the wild: June.

Distribution: New Guinea (endemic).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua New Guinea (Morobe Province: Dischore Mountains).

Cultivation: Intermediate growing epiphyte.
