Dendrobium procerum

Dendrobium procerum Schltr., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. Beih. 1 (1912) 629; 21 (1928) t. 211, fig. 798.

Type: Schlechter 17893 (holo B, lost).

Rhizome very short, roots elongated, rather thick, flexuose, glabrous. Stems crowded, erect, strongly laterally compressed, slender, 40 cm long, many-leaved. Leaf sheaths entirely covering the stem, shining, lined by raised veins. Leaves erect, linear, 4-6.5 by 0.25-0.35 cm, apex obtuse, unequally bilobulate, relatively thin-textured. Inflorescences arising laterally from the stem, 1-flowered, sessile. Floral bract minute. Pedicel and ovary 0.5 cm long. Flower not resupinated, c. 0.8 cm across. Dorsal sepal oblong, 0.6 cm long, apex obtuse. Lateral sepals obliquely oblong, gradually widened to the base, 0.6 cm long, apex obtuse. Petals obliquely ligulate, a little shorter than the sepals, apex obtuse. Lip 3-lobed in apical fourth, fleshy, 0.55 by 0.3 cm, hypochile elliptic at the base, with a broadly conical obtuse backwards-pointing callus; lateral lobes short, obtuse; midlobe subreniform, with 2-3 transverse folds in basal part, a little narrower than the hypochile. Column short, clinandrium 3-lobulate, with the lateral lobules rounded, the median subulate, longer; column-foot oblong, 0.5 cm long, concave. Anther rounded-cucullate, in front truncate, glabrous.

Colours: Sepals and petals white, densely dotted pinkish red, lip spotted and dotted brown-red.

Habitat: Epiphyte in hill forest. Altitude 600 m.

Flowering time in the wild: July.

Distribution: New Guinea (endemic).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua New Guinea (Madang Province: Kani Mountains).

Cultivation: Intermediate growing epiphyte.
