Dendrobium stolleanum

Dendrobium stolleanum Schltr., Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 58 (1923) 105.

Type: Ledermann 12360 (holo B, lost).

Rhizome very short. Stems crowded, patent, slender, fleshy, more or less branching, 40-50 cm long, many-leaved. Leaf sheaths entirely covering the stem. Leaves erect-patent, lanceolate-ligulate, 2-6 by 0.35-0.8 cm, apex acutely and strongly unequally bidentate. Inflorescences racemose, subsessile, short. Floral bracts elliptic, much shorter than the pedicel and ovary, apex shortly acuminate. Pedicel and ovary 2.8 cm long, slender, glabrous. Flowers c. 3 cm long. Dorsal sepal elliptic, 1.2 cm long, apex obtuse. Lateral sepals obliquely elliptic, much widened at the base, 1.2 cm long, apex obtuse; mentum obliquely conical, 1.7 cm long, narrowly obtuse. Petals obliquely elliptic, almost as long as the sepals, apex obtuse. Lip obovate-oblong, 2.3 by 1.2 cm, in basal third with the margins adnate to the column-foot, the apex abruptly hood-like incurved with acutely serrate margins, distinctly surpassing the column. Column 0.5 cm long, clinandrium 3-lobulate, the lateral lobules obliquely semioblong, obtuse, at the dorsal side subdenticulate, the median shorter, subulate-triangular; column-foot narrow, 1.7 cm long.

Colours: Flower blood-red or rose-red with paler tips.

Habitat: Epiphyte in lower montane forest. Altitude 1400-1500 m.

Flowering time in the wild: July-August.

Distribution: New Guinea (endemic).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua New Guinea (East Sepik Province: Felsspitze).

Cultivation: Intermediate growing epiphyte.
