Dendrobium trigonellodorum

Dendrobium trigonellodorum Kraenzl., in Engl., Pflanzenr. IV. 50. II. B. 21 (1910) 186.

Type: Micholitz s.n. (Kaiser Wilhelmsland) (holo HBG?, without data).

Rhizome short. Stems few, crowded, sharply bilaterally flattened, 30-40 cm by 5 mm. Leaf sheaths 1.5 cm long. Leaves at almost right angles to the stem, oblong, 8-10 by 2 cm, chartaceous, apex obliquely obtusely bilobulate, twisted. Inflorescences rather numerous, very short, 2-flowered, spathe formed by two shell-shaped scales, dissolving into fibres. Pedicel and ovary 2 cm long. Flowers c. 2 cm across. Dorsal sepal broadly oblong, 1.2 cm long, obtuse. Lateral sepals obliquely ovate, obtuse; mentum very broad, largely closed in front. Petals narrower than the dorsal sepal, ovate, 1.5 cm by 5-6 mm, apex obtuse. Lip 3-lobed, 0.6-0.7 by 0.6-0.7 cm, minutely papillose inside, with a median basal keel extending to the middle and terminating in a tooth which is curved backwards; lateral lobes ovate, incurved, acute; midlobe elongated-triangular, margins undulate and cartilaginous thickened. Column rather high, stelidia broad, bidentate, filament long, linear, clinandrium almost cup-shaped, stigma large, with two raised lines from the base to the middle.

Colours: Flowers apparently whitish.

Notes: According to Kraenzlin, the dried specimen he examined smelled unpleasantly of Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), hence the name Dendrobium trigonellodorum.
