Bulbophyllum bandischii

Bulbophyllum bandischii Garay, Hamer & Siegerist, Orchidee 43 (1992) 262, illustr., colour phot.

Type: Siegerist cult. (Bandisch 28) 90-7-3 (holo AMES)

Epiphyte. Rhizome creeping, rooting at nodes. Pseudobulbs 3 cm apart, conical in outline, quadrangular, one-leaved, 4 by 1.5 cm. Leaf oblong-elliptic, petiolate, obtuse, including the petiole to 22 by 4.5 cm. Inflorescence suberect, arcuate, arising from rhizome between pseudobulbs and from base of pseudobulbs, 1-flowered, several produced in succession; peduncle terete, with two tubular sheaths, to 15 cm long. Floral bracts tubular, obliquely acuminate, to 2 cm long. Median sepal linear-lanceolate, flat at base then tapering upwards and becoming conduplicate, margins finely ciliate throughout, in the basal part the, conduplicate, part prominently hirsute with multicellular hairs within, to 10.5 by 1.5 cm at base. Lateral sepals lanceolate-falcate, spreading, but the tips more or less connivent, partially pubescent within, to 7 by 1 cm. Petals triangular, in fresh condition there are three elevated ridges along the three main nerves, long-acuminate, extending into wiry antennae, terminated by a densely muricate sphere, the antenniferous part 0.4 cm long, whole petals to 0.9 by 0.3 cm at base. Lip fleshy, arcuate, oblong-ligulate, in front rounded; prominently keeled beneath; margin at base and disc in middle heavily covered with forward projecting strigous hairs, to 0.5 by 0.2 cm. Column short with broad wings and triangular stelidia which are shorter than the anther, at base produced in a short, upcurved, but rather broad column-foot, to 0.5 cm high; pedicellate, ovary cylindric, glabrous, to 4 cm long. Colours: Flower cream-coloured, along the main nerves with irregular purple stripes consisting of small blotches.
