Dendrobium eboracense

Dendrobium eboracense Kraenzl., Österr. Bot. Zeitschr. 44 (1894) 419.

Type: Micholitz s.n. (Duke of York I.) (holo HBG).

Rhizome short. Stems crowded, swollen and quadrangular in the basal part, upwards slender, sharply flattened, leafless in upper part, to at least 80 cm long. Leaves bilaterally flattened, lanceolate, 8 by 0.5 cm, rigid, apex acuminate. Inflorescences clustered. Floral bracts minute. Pedicel and ovary rather long. Flowers c. 1 cm long. Dorsal sepal oblong, apex acute. Lateral sepals broadly triangular, apex acute; mentum large, saccate, open in front. Petals smaller than dorsal sepal, ovate-triangular, apex acute. Lip cuneate, with a low callus and 3 thickened lines on the disc, apex retuse. Column very short.

Colours: Flower yellowish with pale purple lines, lip pale yellow, bright yellow on the disc.

Habitat: Epiphyte in the lowlands.

Flowering time in the wild: October, November.

Distribution: Bismarck Archipelago (Duke of York Island).

Distribution in New Guinea: Papua New Guinea (Duke of York Island).

Notes: Dendrobium eboracense is one of several insufficiently known relatives of Dendrobium macfarlanei. See under that species for a discussion.

Cultivation: Warm growing epiphyte, prefers light position.
